An Investigational Study into the Design of a Low Cost, Adaptive Hearing Aid using MATLAB

Final year Electrical and Information Engineering students Kayla-Jade Butkow and Kelvin Da Silva from the University of Witwatersrand discuss their project which provided solutions to everyday life challenges.

“This hearing aid is quite reliant on knowing time delays between micro phones when sound is hitting it, initially we were doing all this coding by hand which took us hours but once we realised we could use MATLAB, we cut our development time in half.” – Kayla-Jade

“The most valuable thing that we learnt from this project was that a lot of the tools that you need do exist and that you shouldn’t be trying to do things from scratch like designing filters or calculating your coefficients for directionality.” – Kayla-Jade
